According to www.WATE.com, a rock quarry located near a Jefferson County, Tenn., elementary school must halt its operations following a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting. The quarry off of Highway 25 roughly 200 yd. away from Piedmont Elementary has been met with community concerns over noise, dust, and regular blasting activity. Community members hired a lawyer in an effort to halt work at the quarry. A Board of Zoning Appeals hearing was held where the lawyer hired by community members argued that the quarry had failed to report itself as a mine or quarry before it was allowed to begin operations in an area zoned for single-family dwellings and agricultural use. The board ultimately halted work on the site in a 3-2 decision.
